Kazakhstan: President Nazarbayev announces resignation

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced he is stepping down after almost 30 years in power, speaking in a televised address in Astana on Tuesday.


The president said his duties until the end of the presidential term will be assumed by the speaker of Kazakhstan's senate, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Nazarbayed stated he will remain as the head of Kazakhstan's security council, as well as the leader of the Nur Otan party. The president, 78, has lead Kazakhstan since 1990. The next presidential election is scheduled for 2020.
